Walt Disney Pictures is poised to bring the Star Wars franchise back to the big screen with Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, a new original film directed by Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman). Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released in 2023, and it will be Disney’s first film in the series/universe/series since 2019.
When it comes to Star Wars, it’s no secret that Disney has focused a lot of focus on the smaller screen. Walt Disney Pictures chose to turn gears and focus on developing more original programs for their platform, such as The Book of Boba Fett, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Andor, etc., after the studio’s enormous success with The Mandalorian, The Bad Batch, and The Clone Wars.
To focus on larger-scale projects, the movie was placed on hold for a few years. With a release date of 2023, they have plenty of time to start new narrative lines and wrap up or at least fill in certain gaps from other well-known films. We don’t know much about this new endeavor because Disney and everyone affiliated with it are keeping the specifics as secret as the Death Star’s blueprints.
As originally planned, a 2023 Star Wars picture would be written by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. There’s no telling if it was Rogue Squadron or if it’s a part of the untitled Benioff and Weiss film series. An interview with Benioff revealed that he had been working on the film’s story treatment for “a time” and that it was almost finished.
Matthew Robinson will write Rogue Squadron, a film directed by Patty Jenkins. Screenwriting appears to be headed in the right direction.
