Netflix acquired the rights to its next big-budget espionage action film, Heart of Stone, star Gal Gadot in a heated and competitive bidding war. Here’s what we know so far about the movie.

It was developed by Skydance Media, the studio that brought you Mission: Impossible: Fallout, The Old Guard, Annihilation and Top Gun: Maverick, among other notable films. This is a new female-centric spy franchise, similar to Mission: Impossible, and Netflix hopes that heart of Stone will do the same.

Director Tom Harper, known for his work on such projects as Peaky Blinders, The Aeronauts, Wild Rose, War & Peace and more, will helm Netflix’s Heart of Stone.

Written by Hidden Figures Oscar-nominees Greg Rucka and Allison Schroeder, Heart of Stone is based on the book by Greg Rucka (The Old Guard).

Skydance Media’s David Ellison will produce it, Don Granger, Dana Goldberg, Bonnie Curtis, Julie Lynn and Jaron Varsano, and Gadot and her Pilot Wave co-producer Jaron Varsano, Bonnie Curtis, and Julie Lynn.

We don’t know much about what’s going on in Heart of Stone yet, but we do know that it’ll be a female-led Mission: Impossible or 007 spinoffs. According to reports, only Gal Gadot will star in Netflix’s Heart of Stone when the series premieres in September 2021.

Since Gal Gadot has several previously announced projects yet to go into production, Heart of Stone is now in active development. Production will be heavily dependent on her availability. Production Weekly issue 1263 states that the filming location for Heart of Stone will take place at Shepperton Studios in the United Kingdom.

With a large-budget film like Heart of Stone and a huge star like Gal Gadot involved, we wouldn’t anticipate it to be on Netflix sooner than 2023, if at all. However, even though little is known about the film, we are eager to discover more in the following weeks and months.
