There has been a debate among fans of Kate Winslet’s emotional and intriguing crime thriller Mare of Easttown about the concept of a second season.
The Seven-part series is set in a small, impoverished Pennsylvania town and follows Kate as Detective Mare Sheehan, an intuitive detective. She struggles with inner conflict and grief after her son’s suicide.
Kate has been nominated for an Emmy for her depiction of Mare, a bold, smart, and caring character.
The incomparable Jean Smart played Kate’s damaged but loveable mother Helen, and Julianne Nicholson played her loyal and loving best friend Lori (both also Emmy-nominated).
A second season of the show may be in the works, according to Kate. Below, we take a look at what we know so far regarding the possibilities.
Mare solved the murder of Erin McMenamin (Cailee Spaeny), cracked a missing person’s case, and came to terms with her son’s death at the end of the show.
This suggests that Mare will be taking on a new case, potentially collaborating with a new detective, following the death of Detective Colin Zabel (Evan Peters).
Kate told Entertainment Weekly on a possible second series: “Season 2 is a no-go for the cast and crew. If HBO brings it up, we’ll all say no, absolutely not, there is no way we could ever do it.
“Could it be?” was asked when the show’s reception was so positive. As for Brad’s creativity, he’s come up with some unique concepts! But, of course, the outcome will depend on the situation.
But I also have to ask myself: Am I capable of doing it? Could I go through it again, please? Having her in my life was emotionally draining, and I’m trying to figure out if I can do it again. It was an adventure.”
Before this interview, Kate indicated that Mare was missing from her life, telling TV Line: “Mare is a role that I would want to portray again. She’s been gone for a long time. I sincerely believe that I am capable of doing so. What a bizarre thing to happen! I’m in a state of mourning right now. What a beautiful role she played!
“The fact that Mare is so crazy and loving and clever and honest makes her incredibly addictive. I had a blast portraying her.”
Kate Winslet would reprise her role as Mare Sheehan, Jean Smart would reprise her role as her mother Helen, and Guy Pearce, who plays her on and off love interest Richard.
We’d also like to see Angourie Rice, who played Mare’s daughter Siobhan, John Douglas Thompson, who played Chief Carter; and Julianne Nicholson, who played Mare’s best friend Lori, whose son Ryan (Cameron Ross) was ultimately held responsible for Erin’s murder, return. Unfortunately, Evan Peters, who played Detective Colin Zabel, was slain in the line of duty. Therefore he won’t be returning.
Ingelsby and Winslet are on board for season two, so we’ll probably have to wait a while before we see anything, but maybe it’ll be sooner rather than later. Sky Atlantic’s Mare of Easttown is available on NOW TV.
