Bloodshot is a superhero film based on the Valiant Comics character of the same name that will be released in 2020. It’s the first in a planned series of films set in a shared cinematic universe created by Valiant Comics. Wilson (in his feature directorial debut) from a screenplay by Jeff Wadlow and Eric Heisserer and a story by Wadlow. It follows a soldier who was killed in battle, only to be resurrected with superhuman abilities by a group that wants to use him as a weapon.
Sony Pictures Releasing released Bloodshot in theatres on March 13, 2020, in the United States. The film received mixed reviews from critics and grossed $37 million worldwide. Sony made the film available digitally on-demand less than two weeks after it was released theatrically, due to the COVID-19 pandemic closing theatres around the world. A sequel is in the works.
Plot
Ray Garrison and his partner, Gina, fly to an Italian beachside town on the Amalfi Coast for a vacation after leading a fruitful hostage rescue operation in Mombasa. They are abducted by a mercenary group headed by Martin Axe, who wants to know how the US military found out about the hostages and their whereabouts. When Ray explains that he can’t respond because he doesn’t have access to this material, Axe has Gina executed in front of him. Ray swears vengeance, and Axe kills him.
In the laboratories of Rising Spirit Technologies (RST), a company in Kuala Lumpur that specializes in cybernetic upgrades for disabled US military personnel, an amnesiac Ray awakens. Dr. Emil Harting, the company’s CEO and lead scientist informs Ray that he is the “Bloodshot” program’s first active human target, resurrecting and curing him through the infusion of experimental nanite technology that has now replaced his entire bloodstream. This technology boosts his power and restores his injuries, however, the nanites must be replaced and recharged daily otherwise he may succumb to harm and die once more. The nanites produce a red flickering circle of light on Ray’s chest when they function at full speed.
Former US Navy diver “KT” (with whom Ray strikes up a friendship), former service member Marcus Tibbs, and ex-Navy SEAL Jimmy Dalton are among Dr. Harting’s other patients (who overtly dislikes Garrison). He leaves to avenge Gina’s death after having flashbacks of Gina and Axe. Ray tracks down Axe to Budapest and kills him and his bodyguards using the nanites and RST servers to hack into databases. Ray is put to sleep at RST as his nanites are rebooted. Harting then replaces Ray’s memories with a new scenario about how Gina died, this time with Axe’s associate, Nick Baris, as the perpetrator, as he has done several times before. KT objects to Harting manipulating Ray’s memories for him to go after various goals without question or regret, but she is dismissed and reminded that RST will destroy her by deactivating her enhancements.
Ray reawakens, amnesiac once more, and is reintroduced to RST. He then has flashbacks of Baris kidnapping and murdering him and Gina. He tracks Baris down to East Sussex and kills him, despite the man’s protests that RST is lying. Wilfred Wigans, a programmer forced to work for Baris, detonates an EMP bomb, knocking Ray out and cutting him off from RST. Ray wakes up in Wigans’ office with several conflicting memories about who murdered Gina. Wigans aides him in realizing that RST has been using him to destroy the company’s enemies and competitors. Ray locates Gina and discovers that she is not only still alive, but that their relationship ended five years ago and that she has since formed a new family in London.
KT is sent after Wigans by Harting. She informs Harting that she failed to apprehend the programmer after asking Wigans for help in freeing herself from RST influence and bringing down the company. Meanwhile, Dalton and Tibbs apprehend Ray and return him to the laboratory. The RST computers are destroyed after KT and Wigans sabotage the reprogramming operation. Dalton and Tibbs attempt to subdue Ray after he awakens. He kills them after a long fight while the RST building is demolished. With his nanites depleted, Harting confronts Ray, optimistic that the soldier will surrender. Ray, to his horror, is willing to die to win and detonates an explosive, killing them all. Wigans has modified his technology so that Ray’s nanites are self-sufficient, and Ray wakes up with his full memories. After that, the two men and KT depart in search of a better life.
