Kevin Feige previously described Gemma Chan’s Sersi as the movie’s lead.
Zhao told Vogue UK in a recent article on Chan, “I’ve always wanted to create a complex female superhero, which is rare in this genre.” “As well, Gemma was intrigued by the notion and accepted the task. There is something about Sersi that she brought to the role that I feel will inspire people to rethink what it is that makes someone heroic.”
As well as presenting The Deviants, Eternals follows a group of ancient aliens who’ve been living quietly on earth for millennia. Zhao has previously mentioned that she explored how Eternals may go “far and larger” than Avengers: Endgame when developing the film.
According to Chan, Sersi is not necessarily the finest combatant, and her skills are not the most visible. “Most importantly, she’s an empath. People and the planet are inextricably linked to her. Therefore, I leaned on it.”
