Following the success of “Hereditary” and “Midsommar” in 2018 and 2019, it’s no surprise that filmmaker Ari Aster is already working on his next film, “Disappointment Blvd.” It’s planned to feature one of “the most successful entrepreneurs of all time,” with one of the key cast members from “Joker” signed on to direct the 2022 picture (via Deadline). The combination of the star with Aster is an intriguing notion, and it’s rapidly become a much anticipated endeavour.

However, with little information about the film’s complete narrative, the A24-produced “Disappointment Blvd.” has a strange aura about it. If the terrifying representations of sorrow, love, and loss in “Hereditary” and “Midsommar” are any indication, there will be plenty of subtext beneath the surface. Thankfully, a recent casting release revealed additional information about the four-hour “nightmare comedy.” Here’s everything we know thus far about “Disappointment Blvd.”

Disappointment Blvd. – Release Date

For a long time, rumours circulated that the filmmaker was talking to Joaquin Phoenix about a new project, and in February 2021, Deadline reported that “Disappointment Blvd.” is in the works from Aster, producer Lars Knudsen, and A24.

Following his superb follow-up, “Midsommar,” which included Florence Pugh’s beautifully passionate performance, viewers were naturally eager to learn when Ari Aster’s next project will be shown on the big screen. Disappointment Blvd. – Cast Members

The cast of “Disappointment Blvd.” will be led by Joaquin Phoenix, who will likely play the titular entrepreneur mentioned in the film’s brief synopsis. Given his amazing performances in films like “Gladiator,” “The Master,” and “You Were Never Really Here,” it’s probable that he’ll contribute to the film’s dramatic mood. That is, of course, without considering his work in “Joker.”

However, this will not be a one-man show, as Phoenix will be accompanied by a number of notable guests. Legendary actress Patti LuPone has joined the film, according to Deadline, and while the star’s stage performances have taken precedence in recent years, she’s also starred in shows like “Penny Dreadful” and “Steven Universe.”

Nathan Lane, who recently featured in “Penny Dreadful: City of Angels” and “The Blacklist,” will play with Amy Ryan, who is known for her roles in “Gone Baby Gone” and “Birdman.” Kylie Rogers, who starred in “Collateral Beauty” and “Home Before Dark,” is also a part of the new production. Take that rumour with a grain of salt, as there has been no formal confirmation of the celebrity joining the cast, nor has it been confirmed by A24.

Disappointment Blvd. – Plotline And What We Know So Far

To add to the suspense, the narrative for “Disappointment Blvd.” is being kept a secret, which only adds to the film’s allure. According to Deadline, the film is “an intimate decades-spanning portrait of one of the most successful businesspeople of all time.” Meanwhile, Ari Aster was careful not to reveal too much about the project when addressing to students at UC Santa Barbara in 2020, characterizing it as a “nightmare comedy.”

To put it all together, “Disappointment Blvd.” will be a four-hour epic about the life of a successful entrepreneur played by Joaquin Phoenix, with a splash of comedy thrown in among Aster’s characteristic skill at frightening out viewers.

Given the extended running duration, it certainly sounds like it might have horrible tones throughout. With shooting set to begin on June 28, 2021, A24 is expected to release additional information about the picture in the coming months. While the project is shrouded in secrecy, it’s one to keep an eye on as the new year approaches.
