Channing Tatum has progressed from a Hollywood pretty boy to a top-tier actor since his breakthrough Dog Trailer role as Tyler Gage in Anne Fletcher’s Step Up.
Tatum has appeared in prestigious films such as Foxcatcher, for which he was nominated for an Oscar, as well as comedies such as 21/22 Jump Street and the Magic Mike series, in which he portrays an opportunistic and hardworking male stripper.
Tatum is back in action after a two-year hiatus, with several upcoming projects, including his (co-)directing debut, Dog.
For the first time, Tatum will be in charge of directing a film, which could take his career in an entirely new direction. Tatum’s busy release schedule in 2022 suggests that Dog is just the start of a fantastic year for the actor.
On November 17th, the first trailer for Tatum and Reid Carolin’s “Dog” was released. The soundtrack for the film’s trailer is “Beast of Burden,” a classic Rolling Stones song that is sure to elicit an emotional response from dog lovers everywhere.
Storyline
The plot revolves around US Army Ranger Riggs (Tatum), who is tasked with transporting the military Belgian Malinois Lulu to the funeral of her late handler and owner Nuke.
Despite a rocky start, their cross-country journey brings them together, and they begin to form a true bond and build a bridge of trust.
Tatum’s project is a memorial to his late canine companion.
When a new dog film is being produced, everyone’s main concern is, “Does the dog live??” If the film is anything like the trailer, we’ll have to wait until it’s released to find out, but it’s safe to say no. None of this, however, will stop us from crying.
Anyone who has followed Tatum’s career knows that his longtime creative partner Carolin will also serve as co-director. Carolin has collaborated with Tatum on both Magic Mike and Magic Mike 2 since the first film’s release in 2012.
Carolin worked as an executive producer on a number of other Tatum projects in addition to 22 Jump Street and White House Down.
What Is Tatum’s Next Step?
Channing Tatum will play Riggs in the upcoming film (obviously). Tatum’s last appearance on the big screen was in this year’s surprise hit.
Free Guy, before he took a break from acting in front of the camera to focus on other projects, including his role in The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.
Cast
Tatum’s previous major film role was in Steven Soderbergh’s ensemble heist comedy Logan Lucky, in which he co-starred with Adam Driver, Daniel Craig, and Riley Keough.
In the same year, he co-starred as cowboy secret agent Tequila alongside Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Taron Egerton, Jeff Bridges, and Halle Berry in Matthew Vaughn’s big-budget sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle.
The actor has a busy year ahead of him, as he will co-star in the adventure romance The Lost City with Sandra Bullock and Daniel Radcliffe.
Soderbergh will direct Magic Mike’s Last Dance, the final installment of the successful franchise, which will be released on HBO Max. He’ll be stripping and dancing as well.
He’ll be seen opposite Naomie Ackie in Zo Kravitz’s feature directorial debut, the comedic suspense film Pussy Island, to round out his filmography.
He was recently cast alongside Tom Hardy in a highly anticipated film about the Afghanistan evacuation, written by George Nolfi and distributed by Universal.
Tatum recently produced Fatherhood, starring Kevin Hart, and is also attached to two major projects in development:
Adam Sandler’s Spaceman, a Netflix space thriller, and an untitled Universal monster movie with Jump Street’s Phil Lord and Chris Miller attached, as well as the Adam Sandler space thriller Spaceman.
Is There Anyone Else in Dog?
Tamara, Tatum’s travel companion, will be played by Jane Adams. Aside from the Emmy-winning film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and the Emmy-winning HBO Max series Hacks, you may not recognize Adams’ face, but she has appeared in a number of notable projects.
Kevin Nash, who starred in Magic Mike 2, has also been cast as a co-star alongside Tatum. Among his film credits are John Wick and Rock Of Ages.
He is best known for his time as a WWE wrestler. The dog will make his feature film directorial debut following the wide release of Magic Mike XXL in 2015.
Emmy Raver-Lampman, Nicole LaLiberté, Ronnie Gene Blevins, Bill Burr, Q’orianka Kilcher, Ethan Suplee, The Hunt,
The Umbrella Academy, Twin Peaks, and Crown Heights’ Luke Forbes round out the supporting cast (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It).
Will There Be Another Part?
Dog was set to compete with the live-action/animated basketball blockbuster Space Jam: A New Legacy from Warner Bros. and the horror sequel Escape Room:
Tournament of Champions from Sony when it was originally scheduled to open on February 12, 2021. The dog will be released in theatres on February 18, 2022, a full year later than originally planned.
Both Sony’s Uncharted film, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, and Michael Bay’s action film Ambulance, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, and Eiza Gonzalez, are set to open that weekend, putting the comedy in direct competition.
This appears to be a good date film, so I’m hoping MGM moves it up a weekend for Valentine’s Day.
The weekend before, Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson’s Marry Me and Kenneth Branagh’s Death On The Nile will be released. Other notable releases that month included Jackass Forever, Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi disaster film Moonfall, and Scott Derrickson’s Blumhouse horror-thriller The Black Phone.
Release Date
Dog’s filming schedule had to be rearranged due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Tatum and Carolin are currently filming in Los Angeles for their upcoming project, according to an Instagram post from September 21st. As a result of the pandemic, the production team was required to adhere to strict protocols.
Is The Story Of Dog True?
As far as we know, there is no real-life origin storey for the Dog Trailer. Tatum and Carolin had been working on the film for two years before it was shot.
Because Tatum has a dog named Lulu, he was the inspiration for the film. What better way to make your directorial debut than with a film dedicated to one of your closest friends?
