Jilla (transl. District) is a 2014 Tamil-language action thriller film written and directed by Nesan and released by R. B. Choudary’s company Super Good Films. The film, which stars Mohanlal, Vijay, and Kajal Aggarwal, is about a crime lord and his adopted son, a police officer, whose life and attitude to law change after a violent incident. Soori, Mahat, Nivetha Thomas, Sampath Raj, and Pradeep Rawat also star in the film. D. Imman composed the score, and Ganesh Rajavelu and Don Max handled cinematography and editing, respectively.
The film premiered on January 10, 2014, to mostly favorable reviews; the acting, background score, and action scenes were applauded, although the runtime was criticized and subsequently cut by ten minutes.
On April 19, 2014, Jilla’s 100-day theatrical run came to an end. The film had grossed more than 850 crore as of 5 February 2014, and was expected to gross more than 120 crore by the end of its run. The movie was a financial hit. In 2020, it was also screened in Japan.
Jilla received generally favorable reviews from reviewers. “Jilla is masala entertainment and a full course meal that leaves you with a smile on your face,” Sify wrote, describing the film as “a great outing with your family this festival season and scored 4/5.”
“As far as commercial films are concerned, Jilla is certainly assured filmmaking,” the Times of India said, adding that “the only problem with Jilla is that it is overlong.” Neason continues packing on scenes blind to the running time, most likely in an attempt to make it a wholesome entertainer.
Jilla’s debut in Tamil Nadu brought in about ten million rupees (US$140,000). According to the IB Times, it did well in Kerala as well. It made around $25 million (US$350,000) on its first day and around $70 million (US$980,000) over the course of its extended five-day weekend.
With an overall theatre occupancy of 97 percent in Chennai city alone, the film grossed $3.24 million (US$45,000) in its first week and ranked first for the weekend.
The second week in the city saw an occupancy rate of 85-90 percent, netting about $3.60 million (US$50,000). By the third week, the film had climbed to number ten in Chennai, grossing $5.98 million (US$84,000).
By the fourth week in Kerela, Jilla had grossed about $5 million (US$70,000). The film grossed about 5.8 million (US$81,000) after 8 weeks at the Chennai box office.

Sakthi is the adopted son of Madurai don Sivan, as well as his right-hand man, bodyguard, and chauffeur. Due to the death of his father, Sivan’s driver, by a police officer when he was a boy, he despises the cops.
His disdain is so strong that he despises the color khaki (which is worn by Indian cops), teases his friend Gopal, a sub-inspector, and even loses romantic interest in a woman called Shanthi after learning that she is a cop.
As the current Madurai Police Commissioner insults Sivan, he pressures Sakthi to become an IPS officer in order to save his crime syndicate and disprove the Commissioner’s terms (A policeman can think like a criminal, but a criminal can never think like a policeman).
Sakthi reluctantly accepts the position of Assistant Commissioner of Police for Madurai City East, allowing Sivan and his henchmen to create havoc in Madurai, before one of their actions unwittingly triggers a gas leak, destroying a school and many surrounding houses, killing many people, including women and children.
The incident, along with Sivan’s henchmen assaulting a woman whose husband was killed in a gas leak when she went to the police station to file a report against Sivan, inspires Sakthi to pursue a career as an honest and upright police officer. Sivan does not approve of Sakthi’s current identity, and after a heated debate, he disowns her.
Sivan, his henchmen, and his family then begin a cat-and-mouse game with Sakthi, with Sivan, his henchmen, and his family determined to humiliate Sakthi at any opportunity, while Sakthi, with the help of Shanthi and Gopal, attempts to remove Sivan’s power from Madurai. As a result of his efforts, Sakthi is quickly elevated to Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Sakthi later learns that Sivan’s other adopted son, a minister named Aadhi Kesavan, is planning to kill Sivan in retaliation for Sivan’s childhood murder of his police officer father (the same police officer who murdered Sakthi’s father). Sakthi aims to assassinate Sivan by murdering Sivan’s son Vignesh and blaming it on Sakthi.
Unfortunately for Aadhi, Sivan discovers his scheme and reconciles with Sakthi, the two of whom collaborate to murder Aadhi. On Sivan’s plea, Sakthi reluctantly arrests a reformed Sivan for his misdeeds.
