Omerta is a 2017 Indian biographical crime thriller film directed by Hansal Mehta and starring Rajkumar Rao as British terrorist of Pakistani origin Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh.
The plot of the murder of Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002 and the 1994 kidnappings of Westerners in India for which Omar was imprisoned and spent time in prison are also explored in the film.
It was displayed in the Special Presentations segment of both the 2017 Toronto International Film Festival, Mumbai Film Festival, Florence Film Festival, Hong Kong International Film Festival, and Busan International Film Festival, and was produced by Nahid Khan of Swiss Entertainment and Shaailesh R Singh of Karma Features.
The 2018 New York Indian Film Festival’s closing night film was Omerta. On March 14, 2018, the first trailer was announced, and on April 23, 2018, the second trailer was released. On the 4th of May, 2018, Omerta was released to positive critical acclaim.
Plot
In 2005, actor Mukul Dev, who is also a novelist, proposed the tale of Omerta to director Hansal Mehta. The internet was “very sluggish” when Dev told him the plot, according to Mehta. As a result, he had to purchase books, archive materials, and magazines in order to do his studies. He began working on the screenplay but decided to make Shahid (2012) with Rajkummar Rao instead because it was an “easier film to make.”
Rao, he claims, was a driving force behind the development of Omerta. “I needed to meet Rajkummar, and because I did, he became an enabler, and it was only because of him that I was able to make this film.”
Hansal had originally planned to cast Riz Ahmed, a British actor of Pakistani descent, as the lead in Omerta.
Omerta was created with the aim of exploring evil as a “human trait,” according to Mehta. He went on to say that he wanted the crowd to feel “awe, disgust, hatred, and surprise,” as well as explore the “ramifications of these [terror] incidents on their lives today.”
Omar Sheikh, the film’s villain, is described by Mehta as a “hannibal” of terrorism who is “planning how to outwit you even while talking to you.”
The film also “exposes state-sponsored extremism and how it manipulates young minds into believing a sordid interpretation of Jihad,” according to Mehta. True locations were used in the film, including London, Punjab, Old Delhi, and parts of Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh in India, while scenes in Afghanistan and Pakistan were recreated.
Mehta and his crew went to some of the same locations Ahmed Sheikh had been. “It is an awkward film that will pose uncomfortable questions and responses that we have to pressure our establishment to find,” Mehta said of the film, which does not reveal Sheikh’s backstory or how he became a jihadist.
Several real-life footage of the Indian Airlines flight 814 hijacking, as well as television videos after the September 11 attacks, were purchased from various outlets.
Rao repeatedly watched Sheikh’s videos, documentaries, and hate speeches to “gather a lot of hatred and rage” within himself in preparation for the job.
He said he was “disturbed” while filming the movie because of the role he was portraying, who he described as “easily the hardest character” he has ever portrayed. The Paris attacks of November 2015 occurred while filming. Rao said that he was in character and enjoyed the attacks, but that he soon realised that he was mistaken.
The film’s title refers to an Italian word for a penal code of honour that includes complete refusal to cooperate with authorities. The director of photography and editor, respectively, were Anuj Rakesh Dhawan and Aditya Warrior. The film Omerta was made on a budget of 18 crore rupees (including marketing and promotions).
Omerta received a ‘A’ certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification, with just two cuts: the national anthem was omitted from an inappropriate sequence and a scene featuring full frontal nudity was showcased to reflect the protagonist’s emotional state.
A few days before the film’s release, it was reported that censored scenes were leaked online.
The same day that director Hansal Mehta celebrated his 50th birthday, a special screening of Omerta was held.
