A.R. Murugadoss wrote and directed the 2017 Indian action thriller Spyder, which was produced by N. V. Prasad. Mahesh Babu, Rakul Preet Singh, and S. J. Surya star in the film, which was shot simultaneously in Telugu and Tamil.

Casting
Parineeti Chopra was signed to play the lead actress in March 2016, marking her debut in South Indian cinema. However, due to her inability to secure dates after being cast in the Sushant Singh Rajput-starrer Takadum (which was later shelved), the filmmakers approached Rakul Preet Singh to play the lead.
- J. Surya was cast in a negative role, marking his second time working with Mahesh Babu after directing him in Naani (2004), but this time as an actor. Murugadoss worked as a stunt double for S. J. Surya in the films Vaali and Kushi.

The film, according to Kamalakannan, has heavy visual effects and is being produced by a Russian principal studio. Nayanthara was rumoured to play a pivotal role in the film, but Murugadoss denied it.
Plot Details
Shiva (Mahesh Babu), an Intelligence Bureau member, listens in on people’s calls and tweets in order to assist them if necessary. He created tools to scan the phones of the poor in order to listen to them.
On the night of March 16, he overhears Charlie/Shalini (Rakul Preet Singh) discussing her desire to achieve a 98 percent in her tests, up from a 96 percent, in order to get a USA scholarship with a classmate.
She agrees to go on a date with a man in order to do so, hoping that it would help her focus on her research. Shiva decides to pursue her out of curiosity, and the two begin to fall in love. His work, though, makes it difficult for him to concentrate on his love life.
On the night of April 28, Shiva overhears a young girl asking her friend for assistance because she is alone in her house and afraid because she has no electricity while everyone else in her street does.
Shiva is alarmed and sends his friend Renuka (Himaja), a new police constable, to the girl’s address to assist her. The next day, though, the news channels focus on the two women’s horrific deaths. They were stripped of their clothes, cut up, and the pieces were mixed together.
Shiva goes to the crime scene and admits to being the perpetrator. “I didn’t help them,” he says, “and I should’ve never sent out Renuka,” but his father (Jayaprakash) urges him to find the killer. Shiva is now eager to locate the killer, and he sets out to “spy” on the young girl’s talks and whereabouts with the help of his family.
He discovers that she was pursued by a man in a café. He is able to track down another person who met the stalker using technology. He then returns to the village where the girl’s stalker grew up and continues his investigation using the information given.
He eventually hears about the man’s history from an elderly villager, Bhairavudu/Sudalai (S. J. Surya), who lives with his mother (Kani Kusruti), aunt, and younger brother. He is a kind of psychopath that suffers from sadistic personality disorder and has an unusual compulsion to murder people and watch the victims’ families grieve.
A village kid witnessed him murdering someone one day and told the other villagers. The enraged mob set fire to Bhairavudu/home, Sudalai killing his parents in the process. He fled the village, enraged, with his younger brother to resume his killing spree (Bharath). Shiva believes he has apprehended the assailant, but it is simply his child.
Bhairavudu/Sudalai admits that he murdered 23 people and buried their bodies in 23 metro bridge pillars, and he threatens the civilians to protect his brother.
He also says he intends to demolish a hospital. In front of the 40 people’s families, including an enraged Bhairavudu/Sudalai, Shiva kills Bharaivadu’s/brother Sudalai.
Bhairavudu/Sudalai is enraged and prepares to murder Shiva’s kin. Shiva discovers this when his mother (Dheepa Ramanujam) calls him and expresses her fear that their house has no power while everyone else on the street does, just as the girl had said earlier.
Shiva is able to rescue his family with the assistance of his teammates, but he becomes Bhairavudu/next Sudalai’s victim. On his way home, the man attempts to kill Shiva, but Shiva is impaled by a tank. He gradually regains consciousness and continues his quest for Bhairavadu/Sudalai.
Shiva believes Bhairavudu/Sudalai has locked himself in a house where he can recover, but he has imprisoned the owners since he shot him before he fell unconscious.
He locates Bhairavudu/Sudalai and arrests him using technology and local ladies, but Bhairavudu/Sudalai informs him that he had already arranged a large rock fall in the district. Bhairavudu/Sudalai manages to save the giant rock, but Bhairavudu/Sudalai manages to get away from the cops and carry out his plot to wreck a hospital.
Due to a misunderstanding, Charlie/Shalini discovers the hospital, but declines to say Shiva. Shiva locates her taxi, and she informs him of the hospital’s location.
He runs to the hospital and begins evacuating the patients. He rescued as many as he could, but he was heartbroken that he was unable to save any patients. When Bhairavudu/Sudalai sees Shiva’s anguish, he becomes joyful.
Shiva kills Bhairavudu/Sudalai and announces it to the media “We were just able to kill the patient, not the illness. The biggest happiness in the world is to help those you don’t meet.
Since we don’t have enough time to spend with people, we shouldn’t use technology all of the time.” He also informs them that other individuals may be suffering from the same illness. Shiva walks out of the crowd with Charlie/Shalini at the end of the film.
