Free Guy’s original conclusion is explained by the film’s writer

A different – and less gratifying – conclusion was almost achieved in Deadpool actor Ryan Reynolds’ latest feature Free Guy. Reynolds, a non-playable computer game character, decides to become the hero of the tale in the film, which Digital Spy rated four stars. As Guy is a human, Millie’s romance arc is presented as a love letter written for her by the game’s creator, which is a very sweet gesture.

When the two characters were originally supposed to meet, screenwriter Matt Lieberman said that it was decided that everyone deserved a happy ending, thus the “Ghost moment” was chosen instead.

Lieberman told Collider, “In the original script, he ends up with Millie.” If there’s a sequel, they’ll continue to be friends.” That Ghost moment was important to Ryan and Shawn Levy. A lengthy stay could never be justified in terms of bits and bytes.

“‘What’s the Ghost moment?’ we wondered. It was certainly changed from the original version of the film to the final version of it. After saying farewell to Millie, what happens to Guy? What do you want to do with Guy? Everyone wanted to know he’d be okay and happy, and I think they got it exactly right.”

Because a sequel to Free Guy is almost certain, Lieberman admits he’d want to “try my hand at it” because it was a great pleasure to be a part of the first film in the series. “As far as official sequel discussions go, I haven’t been involved, although two years ago, we did chat a little bit about it on the set. I can see a number of exciting, surprising directions the plot may take, as well as character pairings and other things that might be a lot of fun to watch. That would be awesome if you could give it a shot!”

About Free Guy Original Series

Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn wrote the script and Lieberman wrote the storey for the science fiction action-comedy picture Free Guy, which was directed by Shawn Levy in 2021. As a bank teller, Ryan Reynolds (who also produced the film) takes on the role of a non-player character in an open-world video game (Taika Waititi). Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Joe Keery also appear in the movie.

In the United States, 20th Century Studios released Free Guy on August 13, 2021 in 3D, IMAX, and Dolby Cinema, after a year-long delay caused by the COVID-19 epidemic. Critics lauded the film’s innovative idea and likened it positively to Ready Player One, The Truman Show, The Matrix, and Grand Theft Auto.
