The 2018 action thriller, The Meg, featuring Jason Statham, did quite well at the box office. Subsequently, an announcement a few months after the release of the film stated that a sequel was in the works.
However, since then there has been very little news and the fate of Meg 2 was quite uncertain. Fans will be pleased to learn that news broke this week that the film is finally happening and is going to star Jason Statham.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Ben Wheatley is supposed to be directing the film. Wheatley’s latest work, Rebecca, has just dropped on Netflix and some of his other works are A Field in England, Kill List, High-Rise and Free Fire.
Psychological thrillers and dark comedy are his specialty so it will be interesting to see what he does with a horror movie about sharks.
The first Meg movie was directed by John Turteltaub who Wheatley will succeed. The script for the new film is by Erich and Jon Hoeber. Dean Georgaris wrote the first draft and all of them were writers on the first film.
Jason Statham will be reprising his old role as Jonas Taylor, a rescue diver and an expert on sharks. No other actors have been confirmed for the sequel as of now.
We cannot yet say when to expect Meg 2 since Wheatley is also reportedly working on Tomb Raider 2, which is scheduled to arrive in March 2021.
This was the original release date and there is no knowing how the pandemic might have affected it. Alicia Viaknder’s Lara Croft will probably appear later than previously expected.
If Wheatley is indeed attached to both projects, there can be conjecture as to which one will gain more priority. As far as sales are concerned, The Meg made more of an impact than Tomb Raider.
Still, until any confirmation arrives, we can only speculate. At the very least, this means that Meg 2 has not been shelved. There might be more updates soon.
