Grey’s Anatomy viewers in the United States were shocked when beloved character Andrew DeLuca was stabbed and later died on the operating table in a recent season 17 episode.
The most recent episode of the show dealt with the emotional fallout from the devastating events, resulting in the characters banding together as best they could under COVID constraints to create a video tribute to mourn him.
On Entertainment Weekly, a deleted scene from the episode has debuted, showing the effect DeLuca’s death has on neurosurgeon Tom Koracick after he is informed of the news by Catherine Fox.
He’s taken aback, and the two chat about their friendship with DeLuca before agreeing to split. It’s a lovely scene, but you can see why it was cut.
Actor Giacomo Gianniotti recently expressed his feelings about his character’s death, saying: “There is so much I should say… but all I can think of is thank you. Thank you to all of the fans who shared my enthusiasm for Deluca. One of the greatest honors of my life has been and will continue to be telling his story. Thank you so much.”
Meanwhile, showrunner Krista Vernoff said that the authors were as disappointed as the fans that DeLucas had died, but that the story “told itself.”
Season 17 of Grey’s Anatomy premieres on ABC in the United States. On April 7, it will debut on Sky Witness in the UK, with select episodes still available on NOW.
