John Wick 4 and John Wick 5 are going to be the first movies by the franchise excluding Derek Kolstad.
Isn’t it too shocking to know that the writer and creator of John Wick are quitting the franchise itself? Let’s find out why.
Derek is an American screenwriter and creator. He created the John Wick franchise back in 2014, and since then it has gained all the fame and name.
But has the franchise grown too big to keep Derek involved in its further creation? He is the one who has created the character all by himself for the first two parts of the John Wick franchise. In 2019’s John Wick: Chapter 3- Parabellum, he shared screenwriting credit with Shay Hatten, Chris Collins, and Marc Abrams. But he is not involved in the upcoming sequels, John Wick 4 and John Wick 5.
Kolstad says that someday or the other the studios will tell you that your creation has graduated, and you just have to accept it. He adds that he is still close to his creation, as well as the director Chad Stahelski and co-director David Leitch, but he has no idea how the sequels are going to turn out although he is excited about them.
Was it his decision to move away?
When questioned, Kolstad said that it wasn’t in his agreement. He said that according to the contract he has shared the credit with several people, and they just didn’t come back to him as if they were not supposed to.
Kolstad also said that if this had happened 20 years ago, he would be hurt and disappointed, but considering today’s industry and how things are flowing, he has to accept it and appreciate the situation and bless it with your prayers. Moreover, he said that he doesn’t want to say anything absurd about John Wick as it is still his creation, and he wants it to survive and grow.
John Wick: Chapter 3- Parabellum was a highly successful movie as it grossed 56 million dollars just on its first weekend. It domestically earned 171 million dollars and internationally 326 million dollars in the end. With the success of part 3, the other two sequels were declared then. Both the films are going to be shot simultaneously, and they are expected to be released earliest by 2022 and 2023.
