The streaming giant has been producing one huge film after another this year, including action films The Old Guard and Extraction. And Netflix’s ties to the world of comedy are very strong. So it’s huge news that it has managed to grab both Awkwafina and Sandra Oh for a comedy movie that already has us psyched.
The name of the film has not been decided yet but the two are reported to be playing estranged sisters repairing their relationship. They are brought together when one decides to fulfill the other’s long-time desire to be on a game show. Awkwafina plays the chaotic sister who turns Oh’s “lonely recluse” life upside down in an attempt to fix their relationship.
Jen D’Angelo who wrote Workaholics and is writing the sequel to Hocus Pocus is also penning the script for the film. Will Ferrel is producing it alongside Awkwafina, Sandra Oh, Maggie Haskins and Italy Reiss. Since Ferrel was the producer on the hilarious Dead to me and Booksmart, it can be assumed that this will be a good one too.
Oh is known best for her roles in Grey’s Anatomy and Killing Eve and is an incredibly talented actress. Comedy is the genre in which she can be expected to shine even though she has not had any leading roles in comedy so far. She will also be in a dramedy series called The Chair by D.B. Weiss and David Benioff of Game of Thrones fame.
Awkwafina first appeared on the scene as an actress in the extremely popular Crazy Rich Asians and has been cast in a variety of things since. She is also set to appear as a voice-actor on Raya and the Last Dragon as well as playing Scuttle in the live-action Little Mermaid.
The buddy-comedy genre seems like a great format for these two talented actresses to bounce off each other and a female-lead comedy with two Asian actors is groundbreaking. It’s very exciting that these high-profile stars have been able to make enough time to work on this and with their track records of great chemistry with their co-stars, this should be a worthwhile watch indeed.
