Mid 2020, Netflix’s documentary series titled Indian Matchmaking made headlines in the country and abroad for its regressive portrayal of the arranged marriage system in the country.
The show revealed the deep-rooted patriarchy and caste bias that is relevant in the society even to this day.
But like they say in the biz ‘No publicity is bad publicity’, ratings of this documentary series shot through the roof with almost every Indian in the country and abroad having watched the show.
The series ended with introducing Richa leaving space for season 2 development. But the question remains, will Netflix greenlight Indian Matchmaking for another season?

Release:
Season one of Indian Matchmaking teased many singles on the show who didn’t make an appearance but were looking for a partner. This leads us to believe that Academy Award-nominated creator, Smriti Mundhra has more in store for fans.
In an interview, she shared that she has “unique plans” for the next season of Indian Matchmaking. She also shared that this time around she would push for more diversity in the cast.
Since the massive success of the show, they are bound to receive applicants who will bring up various other matters such as colorism, racism, religious diversity, inter-caste and inter-religious marriage, and the LGBTQ community.
The second season of Indian Matchmaking could attempt to do what it failed to do in Season one, i.e., not glamourize patriarchy and have the female voice acknowledged and not reduce it to “flexibility, compromise and adjustment”.
If the show were to accommodate these changes, one can expect a Season 2 in the works. While there is no official announcement regarding the renewal of the show, if Indian Matchmaking were to get a pass, one can expect the second season to premiere on the streaming giant by mid-2021 as it’s predecessor.
The premiere date is subjected to change depending on the COVID-19 pandemic.
Cast:
In the reunion episode of the series, one finds out that none of the matches brought together by matchmaker Sima Taparia lasted. Therefore, will Season 2 see a comeback of some of the fan favorites such as Nadia Jagessar or Vyasar Ganesan, or Ankita Bansal, only time will tell.
But one thing we know for sure is that the Rishta aunty, as netizens like to call her, a.k.a. Sima Taparia will return as the matchmaker.
Plot:
Indian Matchmaking follows singles in India and the US who are on a journey to find their significant other through the traditional process of matchmaking.
