Recently, Pirates of the Caribbean star, Johnny Depp filed a defamation lawsuit against British tabloid The Sun.
Lawsuit explained in detail:
On July 7, 2020, Johnny Depp arrived at the High Court in London to launch legal action against the publisher as well as the executive editor Dan Wotton of the British tabloid The Sun. He took this action over the article wherein it was named a wife-beater. Both Johnny and his ex-wife Amber Heard were present in the court. The article was titled ‘Gone Potty – How can JK Rowling be ‘genuinely happy’ casting wife-beater Johnny Depp in the new Fantastic Beasts film?’.
The article was written back in 2018 after JK Rowling supported the cast of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald film where Johnny Depp played the lead role. Furthermore, the article said “the worst type of Hollywood hypocrite” to JK Rowling for supporting Johnny Depp in the film.
The topic grew hotter after a year when Amber Heard wrote a column in The Washington Post, where she revealed about sexual violence. She didn’t reveal the name of her ex-husband directly, but she brought up the physical abuse allegations. The 37-year-old actress also claimed that Depp was very abusive and violent towards her when they were married. So Depp filed a $50 million defamation lawsuit and stated that the allegations are not true.
Amber Heard and Johnny Depp were married for 2 years between 2015 and 2017. Some sources claim that Depp first hit Heard back in 2013 after she joked about a tattoo on his arm that read “Wino Forever”.The tattoo was written as “Winona Forever” which refers to Winona Ryder. He was dating this actress until 1993. In court, Sasha Wass QC, who is The Sun’s lawyer, claimed that Johnny Depp slapped his ex-wife 3 times during that incident.
Allegations against Depp
In court, Aquaman star, Amber Heard supported The Sun’s article and submitted fourteen incidents of assault by her ex-husband. In one of the incidents, she claimed that Depp tried to choke her and pushed her to the ground when she discovered a bag of MDMA pills. According to her, the event took place, while Depp was shooting for his film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Furthermore, she described this incident as a three-day hostage situation.
On the other hand, Depp denied every single accusation and clearly stated that he never hit her. His version of the story is completely different from Heard’s accusations. According to Depp, Amber Heard threw 2 vodka bottles towards his direction, and due to that, he severed his finger badly. Heard did this after learning that Depp was planning a post-nuptial agreement. On the other hand, Heard said that he injured his fingers while smashing a telephone against the wall.
In 2016, Heard filed for divorce when Depp hit her in their apartment in Los Angeles. Later on, the police closed the case because it has no evidence. After a few days, she withdrew her complaint and ordered a $7 million divorce settlement with her ex-husband.
How has Johnny Depp responded to the current situation?
Depp denied ever hitting her ex-wife and stated that the allegations are sick. On Tuesday, he said to the court that The Sun’s claims of him being a wife-beater are not true. Vanessa Paradis and Winova Ryder will give statements soon to support him. In the defamation lawsuit, Depp’s lawyers stated that Heard’s allegations in the article are false. In Depp’s declaration, he revealed that Amber Heard fabricated the domestic violence accusations.
He also reported that she went to court with fake bruises. The surveillance camera and witnesses revealed that she did not have any bruises during the preceding week. Furthermore, he also accused Amber of abusing him throughout their marriage.
Besides, he accused Elon Musk of having an extramarital affair with Cara Delevingne and Amber Heard. Also, Johnny’s lawyers revealed that Heard had been unfaithful with both James Franco and Elon Musk.
