Locked Up (“Vis a Vis” meaning Face to Face is Spanish) is a Spanish TV series following the life of Macarena Ferrero, an innocent woman who ends up in the prison due to some seriously bad decisions.

The storyline revolves around the metamorphosis of Macarena from a naive girl to a cunning, crooked woman.
She has to deal with abuse by the police authorities while also protecting herself from the prison’s most notorious inmate Zulema Zahir (who later becomes Macarena’s ally) and her best friend/ side-kick Saray.
We see how the environment forced her to alter her personality. We also get to see the hardships the Ferrero family has to go through and how they do a lot of moral sacrifices to get enough money to rescue Macarena.
The show premiered on 20 April 2015 on Spanish Network Antena 3. It was canceled a year later. Then Fox Spain aired the last two seasons and the show went on to become the most-watched.
It was well-received by the audience and has a rating of 8.2 out of 10 in IMDb and 71% in Rotten Tomatoes.
Now Netflix has bought the global streaming rights.
Though the show initially focused only on the character development of Macarena Ferrero, it later evolved to become an ensemble show.
By the end of the fourth and the final season of the show, with a 12-year time jump, we saw Macarena and Zulema team up and carry out heists. Saray has taken over the custody of her daughter who is now a teenager and seems to be a protective mother.
Due to the show’s overwhelming success, a spin-off of the tale Locked Up: The Oasis (Vis a Vis: El Oasis) was released on 20 April 2020. It followed the life of Zulema and Macarena going on heists.
But will there be a sixth season? Well, the answer is sadly no. All the actors have booked other projects and we can see Alba Flores, the actress who played Saray, play Nairobi in Money Heist (La Casa de Papel).
