Not all books are meant to be adapted in a movie and moreover the chance of it becoming a blockbuster cut to a very slight edge. Angelina Jolie’s new film Those Who Wish Me Dead is based on a novel under the same name and the author is Michael Koryta (also having credits as a screenplay co-writer). This new release was supposed to mark Jolie’s return in the action movie genre, but the blend of multiple story lines tried to be placed in one was not really digestive to the audience. The film opened in 3,188 cinemas across the US and grossed just $2.8million in the US, and $7.8m globally. The film falls in the survival action thriller category.
The story follows a 12-year young boy running away from the murderers of his father because he witnessed it, now they wish to shush the boy. On the run he turns to firefighting smokejumper Hannah (Angelina Jolie) who herself is not over the grief of the three lives she couldn’t save from the forest fire. To recover from the trauma, she goes into the fire tower to hide.
The other two recent releases, “Godzilla vs. Kong” and “Mortal Kombat” by Warner Bros. were able to make a decent amount at the box office. The director of the movie Those Who Wish Me Dead, Taylor Sheridan lent his pen as the co-writer as well. The prolific writer is a big name for many hits such as Hell or High Water, Wind River, Sicario etc. and is most famous for the series Yellowstone. As for Angelina Jolie, after her big flop in box office for Those Who Wish Me Dead, she is all geared up for Marvel’s The Eternals.
