Almost every favourite toy from the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s has been adapted into a full film or television series these days. Everything from G.I. Joe from Transformers to Battleship has been adapted into a live-action film. And there will be one more toy-based film to add to the collection once the “Micronauts” film is released.
From 1976 through 1980, the Micronauts were a series of iconic science fiction toys produced by the Japanese Mego company and distributed in the United States. From 1979 until 1986, they were also the focus of a Marvel Comics series. The Micronauts are a squad of warriors that fight in the Microverse, a microscopic realm.
The flexibility to deconstruct and combine the Micronauts with other Micronaut action figures and machinery was the major feature of the real-life toys. A live-action Micronauts adaptation has been in the works since 2009, according to Toy News International, and it is still in the works. Here’s everything we know so far about the little warriors’ big-screen debut.
Micronauts – Release Date
There is no known release date for the Micronauts film. The film’s distributor, Paramount, pulled the picture off its 2021 release date in November 2020. The release date for the Micronauts film had previously been set for June 4, 2021. The most recent big production news occurred in September 2019, when Paramount and Hasbro engaged Dean DeBlois to direct the film.
The coronavirus epidemic prompted Paramount to reschedule its release schedule, as it did for other movie companies. Many other projects, like the Micronauts film, have had their release dates pushed back or postponed indefinitely. Others, such as Paramount’s “Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse,” had their debuts rescheduled to be streamed only.
We can make an informed prediction as to when the Micronauts movie will be released based on the prior timeframe. Because it took a year and nine months from DeBlois’ announcement to the premiere, the Micronauts movie might debut as early as late 2022 or early 2023 – and that’s if everything continues on schedule. It’s too early to tell at this time.
Micronauts – Cast Members
The start of production on the Micronauts movie has yet to be announced, so it’s still conceivable that the screenplay hasn’t been finished. That implies it’s far too early for casting announcements, which should happen over the next six to nine months, provided the Micronauts film continues to be shot.
Dean DeBlois, who will write and direct the film, is the only confirmed talent so far. DeBlois previously worked on “Lilo & Stitch,” as well as the “How to Train Your Dragon” film trilogy. DeBlois will make his live-action feature film debut with The Micronauts.
Otherwise, all we can do is guess which Micronauts characters will appear in the film adaptation. They include the protagonist, Arcturus Rann, and the main antagonist, ex-scholar turned despot Baron Karza. Princess Mari, his love interest, and her brother, Prince Argon, as well as Rann’s robot sidekick Biotron, lead a team of “Micronaut” commandos.
Micronauts – Plotline
It’s too early to know anything about the narrative of the Micronauts movie, just like it’s too early to know anything about casting. The Micronauts film will be an adaptation, but it’s unclear if it’ll be a pure adaptation of the toys or if it’ll dig into the Marvel Comics tales — or, for that matter, the Image Comics run from the 2000s, the Devil’s Due Publishing iteration, or the IDW run. There are several alternatives available.
The Marvel Comics version of “Micronauts” is very similar to the toy line, but there’s no guarantee the movie will include it — and it almost certainly won’t be part of the MCU (in fact, according to CBR, the Quantum Realm in the “Ant-Man” movies is just a renamed Microverse to avoid complex legal issues). For the purpose of comparison, “Transformers” was previously a Marvel comic.
If the Micronauts film is even remotely based on the toys and comics, it will take place in the Microverse, a small, future galaxy where a former scholar named Baron Karza has assassinated the royal family and established himself as dictator.
The plot begins when Arcturus Rann, the royal heir, returns after a thousand-year interstellar trip in suspended animation to discover his family has been killed. That sets off an epic battle for dominance of the Microverse between Karza and Rann.
