An American crime thriller web tele series, Mindhunter is a creation by Joe Penhall.
The series is based on the true-crime book Mindhunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit, the book is written by John E. Douglas and Mark Olshaker. Executive producers of the series include Penhall along with David Fincher and Charlize Theron.
The season one of the series was premiered on Netflix on October 13, 2017, and had 10 episodes. The second season of the series was later released on August 16, 2019, and had 9 episodes.
Mindhunter’s story is focused on FBI agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench who operate the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit in Virginia. Along with them, they have psychologist Wendy Carr.
Together they interview imprisoned serial killers to understand their mindset, how they think, and why they commit such ghastly crimes. Their aim is to use this material with the hope to resolve future cases.
Season 1 of Mindhunter series deals with the real American Serial Killer Edmund Kemper who was found guilty of murdering 10 people including his paternal grandparents and mother.
The season takes you to a thrilling ride as Ford and Tench take the help of Kemper in solving a brutal case of rape and murder.
Season 2 is again inspired by real-life events and covers the Atlanta Murders of 1979-81. This case was also referred to as Atlanta child murders.
The case of Wayne Williams who was charged for the murder of two adult men but was never found guilty for killing 28 children.
Both the series were appreciated and received positive reviews from the critics. The show was immensely applauded for its performances.
Fans of the show loved the way the narrative was not lost and all smaller details were taken care of with perfection making it chilling and unsettling.
The cast of the show included Jonathan Groff as Ford and Holt McCallany as Tench in the key roles of FBI agents. Other lead characters of the show included Hannah Gross, Cotter Smith, Anna Torv, Stacey Roca, Cameron Britton, Michael Cerveris, Joe Tuttle, Lauren Glazier, Albert Jones, Sierra McClain, and June Carryl.
With the critically acclaimed two seasons, fans of the show were eagerly waiting for more thrilling drama revolving around murder mysteries.
However, to add to the disappointment of the viewers, the makers of the show revealed that season 3 is on hold for an indefinite period.
Netflix sited that the hold on season 3 will remain until Fincher is not free from his current set of assignments. Fincher has planned 5 seasons for Mindhunter.
Fincher is currently busy with his film Mank. Netflix also mentioned that it was not fair to keep the actors on hold and prohibit them from seeking other work.
As on date, all the actors are free from their contracts. Fincher plans to revisit the show but that may take some time. The fans of the show are left with no other option but to wait to hope the makers will announce the filming for season 3 soon.
