As per the reports, Federal Prosecutors have charged a police officer of NYPD for acting as an illegal intelligence recruiting agent for the Chinese government. He has been accused of providing intelligence about Tibetans living in the USA to the officials of the Chinese Consulate.
The accused officer’s name is Baimadajie Angwang, 33-year-old, who was later taken into custody on Monday. He was recently working as a community affairs officer in the 111th precinct in Queens, while earlier he has served as a patrol officer.
Allegedly, Chinese government officials were seeking to recruit some intelligence sources in the ethnic Tibetans community in New York. Mr. Angwang was sourcing this crucial information including their activities to the Chinese gov.
Based on all this, a 25-page criminal report was presented in the federal court of Brooklyn.
As per the prosecutors, he has also been accused of inviting a Chinese official to NYPD events, while offering him access to senior police officials.
The resent events like this raise a serious security question inside the largest police department of the country, about the visibility of Chinese government officials and the extent of Chinese efforts to conduct covert surveillance of Tibetan Americans.
Why Mr. Baimadajie Angwang must have chosen by the Chinese officials for this work:
Mr. Baimadajie was born in China, ethnically Tibetan, and a naturalized U.S. citizen become a police officer, incremented in the posts, named Cop of the Month, he became the staff sergeant in the Army Reserve at a young age of 33-years. He also had a secret level security clearance which allowed him to access classified information and run this operation without any hesitation.
As per the reports presented by Prosecutors, Mr. Baimadajie Angwang was in contact with 2 consular in New York since at least 2018. The report also presented several recorded calls between Mr. Baimadajie Angwang and an unnamed Chinese official.
In a call in 2018, Mr. Baimadajie Angwang has suggested to the official that they should visit the new Tibetan Community center in Queens which could in turn help them sporting potential “intelligence assets”He has been suspended from his work without pay.
His parents and brother live in Mainland China still. His parents are members of the Communist Party and his father was retired from the Chinese military. So it’s quite obvious that where is all this coming from.
