As of today, Netflix has confirmed a follow-up to The Old Guard. However, Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, The Secret Life of Bees) will not return to direct the sequel.

Rather, The Old Guard 2 will be directed by Victoria Mahoney, the first woman to direct a Star Wars film (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker). ‘It’s official: The Old Guard is regrouping for a sequel that Victoria Mahoney will direct,’ Netflix wrote on Twitter today (August 26).

Later, Gina Prince-Bythewood tweeted: “I love The Old Guard and the tale and characters I was proud to bring to life. I hope you like it.” To be able to shake up the genre was a thrill.

As a producer, I’ve decided not to direct the sequel. So in the capable hands of Vic Mahoney, Greg Rucka’s scripted story of Nile and Joe and Nicky and Booker and Quynh and Andy, I give over the franchise.”

She had previously told Digital Spy that the film was intended to be the first of a series of films. What matters is the audience’s desire to see more. It’s natural to want the viewers to desire more,” she explained.

“Knowing Greg Rucka, who authored the graphic novel in the script, I’m confident that he always intended this to be a three-part storey. Where the storey is going, I know, and it’s really good. So, if the audience is interested, there will be more stories to be told in the future.”

First-time viewers were sure there would be a sequel, given the first film ended with Quynh (Van Veronica Ngo) returning six months later and somehow escaping.

In this smash action picture based on Greg Rucka’s comic book, an immortal warrior played by Charlize Theron leads an army of immortal troops to safeguard humanity from different threats.

The release date of the sequel has not yet been announced. But Theron has revealed that Joe and Nicky love Marwan Kenzari, and Luca Marinelli will return. In addition, there’s a new episode of The Old Guard on Netflix.
