If there is one certain fact about Dwayne Johnson, it is that he enjoys keeping his schedule as full as possible. A short glance at his IMDb profile reveals that the multi-hyphenate star is currently working on eight films, including the finished “Jungle Cruise,” the still-in-production “Black Adam,” and the impending “San Andreas 2” and “The King.” We can add one more significant project to Johnson’s to-do list this week: the holiday-themed action comedy “Red One.”

Johnson and his production company, Seven Bucks, have put up “Red One” on Amazon, according to The Hollywood Reporter. There appears to be a lot of potential and buzz surrounding the project, with THR speculating on prospective branding and marketing tie-ins. What it actually implies is anyone’s guess, but Amazon’s marketplace and its tie-in potential might be put to good use.

Johnson will produce with Seven Bucks colleagues Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia, according to what we know thus far. “Red One” will be written by Chris Morgan, the screenwriter of “Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw.” There has yet to be a director or any more casting announcement. Here’s everything we know about “Red One” so far, despite the fact that it’s still in the early phases of production.

Red One – Release Date

“Red One” will “shoot in 2022 with a Christmas release in 2023,” according to THR. There are currently no specifics about the planned filming sites or the duration of the production. However, depending on the demands of the “Red One” narrative, Johnson’s and any other cast and crew members’ schedules, and Amazon’s expectations (to mention a few major considerations), production for “Red One” may take place in mid-to-late 2022.

This would allow the film’s post-production to take up much of early 2023, allowing Amazon to implement any major marketing and e-commerce initiatives throughout the year. Furthermore, THR’s mention of “holiday release” suggests that “Red One” will most likely premiere on Amazon Prime Video between Thanksgiving and Christmas Day 2023, or on either of those specific holidays, when the chances of families streaming from the comfort of their own couch are higher than on any other day. If any plans to distribute “Red One” theatrically materialise, Amazon’s objective of securing a significant Christmas release date slot might become obvious.

Red One – Cast Members

So far, Johnson is the only well-known figure associated with “Red One.” Johnson will, of course, star in the Christmas feature picture, according to THR. There have been no formal details on Johnson’s role published.

With a title like “Red One,” we’re willing to say yes to our favourite action star transforming into the world’s most famous gift-giver. If this film is a Christmas-themed film and, by that guess, includes Santa Claus which we’re willing to say yes to with a title like “Red One” then it’s quite possible our favourite action star will be transforming into the world’s most famous gift-giver.

Johnson’s IMDb page reveals that he is no stranger to portraying larger-than-life characters. Johnson has worn many hats, whether it’s as the Tooth Fairy in 2010’s “Tooth Fairy,” a video game hero in “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” tough-as-nails DSS agent Luke Hobbs in the “Fast & Furious” trilogy, or the DC anti-hero Black Adam in the upcoming DCEU film “Black Adam.”

The real question will be who will co-star opposite Johnson in “Red One,” not whether Johnson can pull off a credible metamorphosis into Old Saint Nick (which we know he can, even if it involves a lot of suspension of disbelief). For this project, no names have been thrown into the ring yet, so any casting recommendations are welcome.

Kevin Hart is one proposal that we think will work. Following their collaborations on both “Jumanji” films, the 2016 action comedy “Central Intelligence,” and Hart’s cameo in “Hobbs & Shaw,” having the two reunited on screen for a holiday-themed adventure might be a big attraction. Consider all the elf-related jokes Johnson might make at Hart’s expense.

Red One – Plot

While no particular story elements for “Red One” have been revealed, we do know the film’s overall premise. When we say generic, we really mean it. “Red One” is described as a “globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy, creating a whole new universe to explore inside the holiday genre,” according to THR. That is all there is to it. So far, that’s the full summary.

Even with this flimsy concept, which totally avoids any reference of Christmas, Santa Claus, the North Pole, or reindeer with red noses, it’s clear that it’ll be a holiday film. As a result, as this production progresses, fans may expect to see a high-concept holiday-themed film emerge in the following months.

Furthermore, the term “four-quadrant action-adventure comedy” conjures up images of some of Johnson’s most well-known films, like the “Jumanji” flicks, “Jungle Cruise,” “Hobbs & Shaw,” and “Central Intelligence.” Johnson is a seasoned action, adventure, and comedy star who understands how to handle complicated stories (including those in the aforementioned flicks). This should assuage fans’ fears that the narrative of “Red One” won’t be worthy of Johnson’s talents as an actor, or at the very least, watchable.
