Since at least 2019, fans of “One Punch Man” have been expecting the arrival of “One Punch Man 3,” and it looks that the wait will be extended. In the meantime, fans may watch the first season of Shingo Natsume’s upcoming anime “Sonny Boy,” helmed by the same man who directed “One Punch Man.”

This time around, Natsume is in a very different anime, having traded in the world’s strongest superhero for a group of regular high school classmates. The series is being developed by Natsume and Madhouse, the same company that created “One Punch Man.”

In addition to Natsume, Madhouse has put together an amazing cast for “Sonny Boy,” which you can read about below. “Sonny Boy” has as strong a chance to be a smash as any anime these days, based on the names involved.

Here’s all we know thus far about the upcoming film “Sonny Boy.”

Sonny Boy – Release Date

It’s almost here. The Anime News Network announced in May 2021 that “Sonny Boy” will premiere on July 15 — technically, July 16 because it will air on Japanese television at 12:30 a.m. It will be shown on Tokyo MX, KBS Kyoto, Sun TV, BS Asahi, and the RAB Aomori Broadcasting Corporation in Japan.

The anime site Funimation have bought the streaming rights to the series for English-speaking fans. When it comes to availability, English-language versions of Japanese anime, both dubbed and subtitled, generally arrive two weeks after their Japanese debut dates. That implies “Sonny Boy” should be available around July 30 in English-speaking nations.

Sonny Boy – Cast Members

On May 13, 2021, Anime News Network confirmed the core cast of “Sonny Boy.” Nagara, the hero and a third-year high school student, will be played by Aoi Ichikawa. Nozomi, a new classmate who recently relocated from Berlin, will be played by Saori Nishi.

Mizuho, one of Nagara’s classmates, will be played by Aoi Yki, who is usually followed by her three cats, who belonged to her grandmother. Nagara’s unruly classmate Asakaze will be played by Chiaki Kobayashi.

Shingo Natsume (“One Punch Man,” “Space Dandy”), who created and directed the film, is behind the camera. The anime character designs were done by Norifumi Kugai (ACCA: 13-Territory Inspection Dept.), based on the manga versions produced by Hisashi Euguchi, who worked on “Perfect Blue,” “Roujin Z,” “Eiji,” “Stop! Hibari-kun,” and “Mujin Wakusei Survive.”

Kazunobu Mineta, guitarist and vocalist for the band Ging Nang Boyz, wrote and recorded the theme song, “Shnen Shjo,” which means “Girls and Boys” in English.

Sonny Boy – Plotline

“Sonny Boy” is a classic-style science fiction group drama anime. It’s about a group of 36 high school kids who are on summer vacation when they are unexpectedly transferred to another realm and given superpowers.

According to Anime News Network, the primary protagonists are Nagara, a third-year guy; Nozomi, a “mystery transfer student”; and Nagara’s classmates Mizuho and Asakaze. Some students strive to organise their peers in order to live, while others search for a means to get back home, while yet others simply enjoy their newfound superpowers.

That’s a very similar concept to existing anime like “Grimgart: Ashes and Illusions” or “Arifureta: From Commonplace to World’s Strongest,” as many Redditors have pointed out. That may be a good or terrible thing, depending on your preferences. However, those same fans pointed out that it comes from the Madhouse studio, which has a track record owing to “One Punch Man.”
