Om Raut co-wrote and directed Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior, a 2020 Indian Hindi-language historical action film produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, and Ajay Devgn under T-Series Films and Ajay Devgn FFilms. Due to popular demand, this film was also released in Marathi dubbing. It stars Ajay Devgn, Saif Ali Khan, and Kajol and is based on the life of Maratha warrior Tanaji Malusare. Sharad Kelkar and Luke Kenny also appear in supporting roles. Tanaji attempts to recapture the Kondhana fortress after it passes to Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, who transfers power to his trusted Rajput guard Udaybhan Singh Rathore in the 17th century.
Raut made his Bollywood directorial debut with the film, which premiered on July 20, 2017. Following popular demand, the film was simultaneously dubbed in Marathi by Raut, who previously directed Lokmanya: Ek Yug Purush (2015), for which he won acclaim. Plot
Tanhaji’s father, Kaloji Malusare, began training him in sword fighting in 1647 but died in Umrah as a result of Mughal plunder. A now-adult Tanhaji, along with his younger brother Suryaji, orders Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s Maratha Army to attack an intruding Mughal cavalry 17 years later, in 1664.
In 1665, Mughal emperor Aurangzeb dispatches Jai Singh to contain Shivaji Raje, who is fearful of his rapid imperial expansion in Deccan, and thus annex 23 forts. Later, Mughal general Beshak Khan orders a hasty retreat from the strategic fortress Kondhana, humiliating Shivaji Raje’s mother, Jijabai, who vows to stay barefoot until the Marathas retake the fort. Tanhaji has also been briefed about the treaty. Five years later, a spy for Shivaji Raje informs him of Aurangzeb’s intention to entrust the Kondhana fort to his Rajput general Udaybhan Rathod and use it as a base for the latter’s southern imperial expansion. Raje intends to retake Kondhana, and he intends to lead the campaign because Tanhaji, despite being a capable general, is unable to do so due to his son Rayba’s upcoming wedding. Tanhaji, on the other hand, is enjoying Holi with his kin. Shivaji tells his generals not to tell Tanhaji about the campaign as the Marathas begin their war preparations. Tanhaji travels to Rajgad intending to invite Shivaji to Rayba’s wedding. On the advice of his nephew Chultya, Chandraji Pisal, a Maratha general attempting to usurp Shivaji Raje’s throne, reveals the hidden plot to Tanhaji. Tanhaji persuades Shivaji and Jijabai to let him lead the initiative, and Rayba’s wedding is postponed.
Udaybhan arrives in Burhanpur, while the Marathas discuss his route options. Tanhaji devises an attack plan, but Pisal sends Chultya to alert Udaybhan about it, he plans to sabotage Tanhaji’s mission and kill him so that Shivaji Raje can nominate him as the mission’s in-charge. Pisal wants to gain enough clout to depose Shivaji Raje and join forces with Udaybhan. Udaybhan is also transporting Kamla Devi, the sister of his Rajput general Jagat Singh, who is currently imprisoned. Udaybhan learns of Tanhaji’s attack plot, and Chultya tricks Tanhaji into attacking Maratha soldiers dressed in Mughal garb. In other news, Udaybhan arrives in Kondhana and fires a massive cannon at Rajgad, putting Shivaji’s safety in jeopardy. Tanhaji, dejected, travels alone to Kondhana to learn about a hidden thief entrance. For disobeying the security protocol, Udaybhan kills a guard. Tanhaji resurrects his body and incites the villagers to turn on Udaybhan. He is advised to take part in a Shivratri event on Kondhana, where he is to kill Chultya for betrayal. Udaybhan imprisons and tortures Tanhaji. Udaybhan’s decision to marry his sister is revealed when Jagat Singh secretly releases Tanhaji. Tanhaji vows to free them from the clutches of Udaybhan. Tanhaji makes his way back to Umrat after escaping the thief-entrance.
Udaybhan hangs the guards responsible for Tanhaji’s escape, and Jagat Singh decides to marry Udaybhan’s sister on Ashtami’s eve, persuading her to fake the wedding preparations before Tanhaji arrives. Tanhaji now intends to target Kondhana directly on February 4, 1670, during Ashtami night. He scales the fort and assaults the Mughal army from different entrances. Jagat and Kamla Devi can flee due to the chaos. Tanhaji is killed in the ensuing battle after Udaybhan is warned, though he captures Kondhana before killing Udaybhan. Shivaji’s army defeats Kondhana, but he is overcome with grief over Tanhaji’s death. Later, he directly supervises Rayba’s marriage, though Aurangzeb’s ambition to conquer southern India remains unfulfilled.
