As far as films are concerned, science fiction is one of the biggest genres right now. Popular science fiction has only just become cool and popular to the masses, having been a rather niche genre till a few years ago. With plenty of elements of action, drama, thriller, mystery, romance and even horror, science fiction has something for everybody. Here are some of the greatest sci-fi films available on Plex right now in no particular order.
Pacific Rim – Directed by Guillermo del Toro, this is a science-fiction monster film that is all about gigantic man-made robots battling enormous sea monsters. Although it was slammed by critics for the acting and plot, the visuals in the film are undoubtedly great and it did very well at the box office.
Stargate – A sci-fi adventure film from MGM and directed by Roland Emmerich, this was the first film released from the Stargate franchise. It is about an ancient teleportation device that enables travel through the universe.
Minority Report – Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of the short story of the same name by Philip K. Dick is a futuristic look at American crime-fighting agencies. Starring Tom Cruise as the lead John Anderton it’s a combination of sci-fi, mystery and thriller.
Cube – A Canadian sci-fi horror film directed by Vincenzo Natali, the film is about a group of strangers who wake up and find themselves trapped within a giant cube and have to work together to escape a maze full of dangerous traps.
Monsters – Directed by Gareth Edwards, this film is all about alien invasions and two people who need to journey from a Mexico in complete quarantine to the US border.
Star Trek: First Contact – Directed by Jonathan Frakes, this 1996 film was the highest-grossing film in its opening weekend. Considered by many critics to be the best Star Trek film, it features the crew of the USS Enterprise-E travelling back in time to the mid-21st century.
The Dead Zone – An adaptation of the bestselling Stephen King novel, it is the story of a man who wakes up from a years-long coma to find he has developed psychic abilities. The film received quite positive reviews.
Vanilla Sky – Another Tom Cruise film, this 2001 sci-fi psychological thriller was an adaptation of the Spanish film Open Your Eyes and featured actors like Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz.
