An American reality competition series, The Circle is produced by Studio Lambert and Motion Content Group. It made its space on Netflix in January 2020 and is based on the British TV series of the same name.
Besides the American version, Netflix has also planned to create other versions of the series in geographies like France and Brazil. This would be as per the part of their partnership with All3Media. The series is promoted on the concept that “anyone can be anyone in The Circle”. The show has constantly being compared to the Big Brother and Catfish from a format standpoint.
In this reality-based show, the contestants are staying separately in their own apartments and are isolated from the outside world. The only way by which they can communicate with each other through an app “The Circle” which is a computer-based program and has the ability to transcribe their messages into text.
Contestants are free to portray themselves whatever they like and can have a completely separate identity to help them win over the other. All the participants are timely asked to rate their fellow contestants, with the highest voted becoming the influencers and thus have the power to “block” any one of the contestants from the circle and cutting them off from the game.
Season 1 of The Circle saw its first winner as Joey Sasso who also won the cash prize of $ 100,000. Shubham Goel was the first runner up and Sammie Cimarelli won the Fan Favourite Award and a cash prize of $10,000. The show received positive reviews and bases that Netflix renewed The Circle for its season 2 and season 3 on March 24, 2020.
The series was supposed to start auditioning the contestants but due to the pandemic COVID 19, everything is on a delay right now. There is no update on when the show will start filming for the new season. However, there is a possibility that the season may come out in January 2021, exactly a year after the premiere of season 1.
Well, we can say that the popularity of reality shows has certainly increased massively over the years as they don’t follow any script, the contestants are real and quite un-predictable. This series is a perfect blend of the real world and the social media world.
