Despite being surrounded by films about secret agents, superheroes, and whatever the “Fast and Furious” crew’s job titles are at this time, the “John Wick” franchise has managed to become the action movie sensation of the last few years.
Keanu Reeves’ dog-loving assassin John Wick has inspired other similar takes on the action genre since he initially rocked the criminal underworld in the 2014 blockbuster that launched the franchise — from the hidden Netflix action gem “Polar” to the interesting “Nobody,” which stars none other than Bob Odenkirk of “Better Call Saul” fame.
This new inflow of mystery everymen who turn out to be lethally skilled one-person armies could oversaturate the market, leading the sub-genre to expire like Mr. Wick’s Ford Mustang.
That time, though, is yet a long way off, as the best may very well be yet to come. What if some of the most amazing actresses in the world were cast as members of a secret, all-female assassin club, banding together to annihilate their foes? That film is on the way, and its first trailer was just released. Let’s take a closer look at the film dubbed the “female John Wick” by some.
Gunpowder Milkshake doesn’t hold back.
When Netflix releases “Gunpowder Milkshake” on July 14, fans of fast-paced, vicious action will be in for a treat, according to the debut trailer.
Karen Gillan (Nebula from the Marvel Cinematic Universe) plays Sam, a formidable assassin who gets into trouble with her adopted daughter Emily (Chloe Coleman). Thankfully, Sam isn’t the only assassin on the loose, and she quickly joins forces with a squad commanded by her mother Scarlet (Lena Headey of “Game of Thrones” and “Judge Dredd” fame).
Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett, and Carla Gucino play the other members of the team, and they’re no less formidable. That’s a lot of star power, and it’s backed up by a lot of artillery.
To go up against a team this powerful, you need players who are smarmy and deadly. As it happens, “Gunpowder Milkshake” also stars Paul Giamatti, as well as fellow “Game of Thrones” alum Ralph Ineson (who plays the title character in the upcoming “The Green Knight”).
The entire “unstoppable assassins fighting hordes of enemies” tone of the “Gunpowder Milkshake” teaser has reminded some YouTube users of the “John Wick” universe. One commenter said, “John Wick + Bird of Prey Equal this movie.” Another person remarked, “I’m getting the feminine John Wick vibes. It appears to be fantastic.”
Many Twitter users seems to concur. “PSA: ‘John Wick’ isn’t simply a movie anymore.
It’s currently considered a subgenre “The trailer was mentioned by @RameezKhanSA on Twitter. Meanwhile, Twitter user @BlackMajikMan90 took the analogies even farther. They tweeted, “‘Gunpowder Milkshake’ looks like a dab of ‘John Wick’ mixed with a sprinkle of ‘Birds of Prey,’ served with a side of ‘Atomic Blonde.’
“This appears to be fantastic, and I’m all in.” It’s easy to agree with that notion based on the trailer and the great cast.
On July 14, “Gunpowder Milkshake” will be available to stream on Netflix.
