The successful ABC medical drama The Good Doctor, starring Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, is returning for a fifth season. The program, which debuted in 2017 and is created by House creator David Shore, has become one of ABC’s top drama shows, alongside Grey’s Anatomy, Station 19, The Rookie, and A Million Little Things. Here’s all we know about season 5 of The Good Doctor.
Streaming Date and Time
Season 5 of The Good Doctor will launch on Monday, September 27 at 10 p.m. The event concludes ABC’s Monday programming, which is currently comprised of Dancing With the Stars. It competes in the 10 p.m. time slot with two new series, CBS’ NCIS: Hawai’i and NBC’s Ordinary Joe. Those who are unable to watch The Good Doctor live can catch up on the latest episodes on ABC.com or Hulu the day after they appear on broadcast television (Tuesday, in this case).
Dr. Shaun Murphy, played by Freddie Highmore, is the protagonist of The Good Doctor. The British actor rose to prominence in the 2004 film Finding Neverland and has since appeared in films such as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, August Rush, and Bates Motel.
As previously stated, The Good Doctor is losing a longstanding cast member with the departure of Antonia Thomas at the end of season 4. According to IMDb, below is the entire season 5 cast of The Good Doctor:

Dr. Shaun Murphy, a young medical genius with autism, stars in The Good Doctor. His talent lands him a job at a prominent hospital’s surgical section. In addition to dealing with medical crises, the show focuses on Shaun’s maturation as a young man and the lives of his coworkers.
ALERT: SPOILER ALERT. Shaun took a huge step towards the end of Season 4 when he accepted Lea’s proposal, and the two are now engaged. Another significant change was the decision of Dr. Claire Browne (Antonia Thomas), who has been with the program from its inception, to accept a post in a remote hospital in Guatemala, thereby ending her arc on the show.
In other plot developments, Morgan and Park confessed their emotions for one other; Dr. Marcus Andrews stated that his wife has left him; and Dr. Mateo Rendon Osma has decided to return to the United States to be with Dr. Audrey Lim, despite a decades-old order for his imprisonment.
The official description for The Good Doctor season 5’s opening episode is as follows: “After their return from Guatemala, everyone is excited for Shaun and Lea’s forthcoming engagement celebration. Meanwhile, a young single mother discovers that her son may have gotten cancer from an unexpected source, and Mateo learns whether his past troubles in America will be resolved.”
