Following the success of “The Father,” French playwright-filmmaker Florian Zeller is now working on “The Son,” his next project.
“The Father,” based on Zeller’s play of the same name, starring Anthony Hopkins as an old father suffering from dementia and Olivia Colman as his anxious daughter. With “The Father,” Zeller made his directorial debut and co-wrote the screenplay with Christopher Hampton. It was a critical triumph, earning Hopkins an Oscar nod for Best Actor and Zeller and Hampton an Oscar nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Now, fresh off an Oscar triumph, Zeller is returning to filmmaking and, once again, drawing inspiration from his own work. “The Son,” his next film, is based on his play of the same name, which premiered at London’s Kiln Theatre in early 2019. (via The Guardian).
“The Son” tells the story of a divorced couple who must work together to heal their problematic adolescent son. Zeller is teaming with Hampton on the screenplay once again to bring this narrative to the big screen. Here’s all we know about “The Son” thus far.
The Son June – Release Date
The release date for “The Son” has yet to be confirmed. However, according to First Post, filming is set to begin this summer in New York City.
We also know that after winning the Oscar, Zeller was anxious to go back to work and had “The Son” in mind as his next project. Zeller talked to Deadline in March of this year, before the Oscar ceremony, about his next moves.
The Son June – Cast Members
Who will be in the cast of “The Son,” according to Zeller, who he admires and is thrilled to work with? Hugh Jackman, Laura Dern, and Vanessa Kirby are among the major names in Hollywood right now, and the cast has been revealed.
Both Dern and Kirby have recently received Oscar nominations, with Kirby receiving a mention for her starring part in 2020’s “Pieces of a Woman” and Dern winning Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her work in 2019’s “Marriage Story.” Jackman has also been nominated for an Academy Award for “Les Misérables,” which he starred in in 2013.
For his part, Zeller is ecstatic with the cast thus far. “Both Hugh and Laura naturally communicate incredible warmth, compassion, and vulnerability… allowing our audience to embrace and experience every moment,” he stated in a statement upon learning of Jackman and Dern’s hiring (via Variety).
And, according to Zeller, with the latest revelation of Kirby’s appointment, “Vanessa Kirby is a fantastic actor in my opinion: passionate, imaginative, and strong. I’m really thrilled to be taking her on this cinematic journey.”
The Son June – Plot
When his ex-wife Kate (Dern) reaches out to him, Peter (Jackman) is settling in with his new partner Emma (Kirby) and their newborn kid. Nicholas, Peter and Kate’s 17-year-old son, is going through a difficult period. He’s been acting out, angry and aloof, and has recently indicated a desire to live with his father instead. However, if Nicholas’s condition proves to be more serious than first believed, Peter will have a tough time caring for his kid and keeping his family together.
“The Son” is the second chapter in a thematic trilogy Zeller has established with three of his plays (the third being “The Mother,” which may also be adapted for the film) exploring intimate familial relationships, after “The Father.” “‘The Son’ is a truly human narrative that, I feel, links us all; I hope audiences will be profoundly affected by this family’s journey,” Zeller stated of the film.
If “The Father” is any indication, “The Son” will be a captivating, touching narrative with amazing graphics. We’re excited to watch “The Son” come to life.
