In terms of a one-line sale for an original sci-fi movie, it’s a corker that instantly grabs your attention. Time travel, aliens, and a race against time? We were sold on it immediately, The Tomorrow War might not fully deliver on its brilliant premise, but it’s still an epic and original sci-fi trip that’s worth taking. It definitely appears to have a fairly conclusive ending when we first watch the original series (even if we ignore that time travel paradox at the end); however, a sequel is in production already so if there might be any doubts then they will eventually get cleared up.
But the thing is, before the sequel rolls out fans have been scratching their heads on some of the most complicated things and the good news is that they might get some answers as executive producer David S Goyer has promised some answers to many of the movie’s lingering questions. The most important is the lingering White Spikes questions.
David S Goyer said that he hoped fans will “get that answer” when he was asked by The Hollywood Reporter about The Tomorrow War’s sequel which will explain the motivation behind the aliens transporting the White Spikes.
“I thought that was one of the more clever twists that [writer] Zach Dean had come up with, [that] the White Spikes weren’t the civilization that built the ships that arrived here,” he continued. “They were the cattle, they were the game that they were going to hunt.”
Hinting at a potential plot point for the follow-up, Goyer added: “I don’t want to give away too much but one question is: Why would a civilization breed something like that?
“Fortunately, the film was successful enough that those conversations are happening right now.”
The Tomorrow War 2 aka sequel of the original film is reportedly already in the works. Recently premiering on Amazon Prime Video, the movie was originally slated for a theatrical release before Amazon picked up the sci-fi action thriller from Skydance for $200 million. The plot of the sequel is not revealed yet but we can presume that the battle to save the future from the invading White Spikes may not have come to an end just yet.
Deadline also reports that the key members of The Tomorrow War cast and creative team are also expected to return, at least that’s the plan at Amazon Studios. This would include director Chris McKay and screenwriter Zach Dean, along with the first Tomorrow War star Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson, Edwin Hodge, and J.K. Simmons.
As for now, The Tomorrow War is available to watch on Amazon Prime Video.
