It’s not surprising that a show about sex and drugs is one of the most popular on television—which is why HBO renewed its hit drama Euphoria for a Season 3 in early February 2022, when Season 2 wasn’t even halfway through.
Of course, what is shocking about Euphoria is that those involved in the series’ graphic and often extreme antics—abusing drugs and, at times, each other—are high school students.
The show, loosely based on the Israeli television miniseries of the same name, follows a group of teenagers, particularly Rue, who has already gone to rehab and relapsed by the time the series begins.
This Euphoria is also loosely based on the background of the show’s the creator/director Sam Levinson.
“I was always toying with the idea of chronicling a version of myself from birth to, in its own crazy, mad way, discovering drugs and the need for it since around the age of 18 or 19 before I cleaned up,” says Levinson, who wrote all but one episode.
Levinson (whose father is the well-known Hollywood director Barry Levinson) infused parts of the storey with real-life events and memories.
Because the show was too racy, Levinson didn’t think Zendaya would agree to read for the role of Rue. “But she got her hands on the scripts, and when she said she wanted to meet, I was overjoyed,” he recalls.
“She came in, hoodie on, glasses on, and she started talking, and despite the fact that she has lived a very different life, I just thought, ‘This is it.'” ‘Her name is Rue,’ she says.
Zendaya’s euphoria propelled her from Disney child star to Hollywood A-lister. At the age of 24, she became the youngest actress to win a Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series in 2020.
And based on what we’ve seen of Euphoria Season 2 thus far, particularly her electrifying performance in Episode 5, fans all over the internet believe she should win it again.
Meanwhile, the show’s popularity is growing. The Season 1 finale was watched by approximately 1.2 million real-time viewers, and the show became the second-most tweeted about show on HBO, after Game of Thrones, that night.
With over 14 million views when the second season premiered on HBO Max on January 9, 2022, it was the most-watched HBO episode. As a result, the Season 3 renewal came as no surprise.
Euphoria Has A Bit Of Everything
Despite its popularity, however, the show can be extremely upsetting to watch.
Zendaya has repeatedly warned viewers about the show’s graphic content, which includes both men and women’s full-frontal nudity, repeated drug use, revenge porn, physical and emotional abuse, and more.
Zendaya warned fans, as she had done before Season 1, that the show could be upsetting, Season 2 “possibly even more so than the last.” The season is “deeply emotional and deals with subject matter that can be triggering and difficult to watch,” according to her Instagram.
In early 2022, D.A.R.E. took a strong stance against Euphoria, claiming that it “chooses to misguidedly glorify and erroneously depict high school student drug use, addiction, anonymous sex, violence, and other destructive behaviours as common and widespread in today’s world.” Levinson, on the other hand, thinks the show is plausible.
“As someone who struggled with and overcame drug addiction, I’m very sensitive to drug addiction depictions,” he said in 2019. “I understand she has a large following among young people, but I believe our show portrays drug use in a very authentic and responsible manner.” They also have an intimacy coordinator on set for sex scenes.
Despite its darkness, the creators of the show believe it has a positive side. “From all ages and walks of life, I’ve had so many people reach out and find so many parallels,” Zendaya says.
“There are so many parallels with Rue and her storey, and Rue means so much to them in ways I can understand, but also in ways I can’t, and that means the most to all of us.”
So, what can we expect from Season 3 of Euphoria? Continue reading to find out what’s happened so far, how the real-life Spider-Man could make an appearance in the show, and what Rue and company have in store.
When will Euphoria’s Third Season Premiere?
Season 1’s finale aired in August of 2019 after eight episodes, and the cast and crew were ready to begin filming Season 2 in early 2020.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, production was forced to halt. Production will resume in 2021. Season 3 is expected to begin filming later this year or early next year, assuming no further delays. Season 3 will almost certainly debut in 2023.
What Happened In Euphoria Seasons 1 and 2?
The first season introduced all of the characters, most notably Rue, a drug addict.
In a voiceover, she told the audience that as a child, she had panic attacks, possible bipolar disorder, and other mental health issues–and that her father died when she was 13 years old.
She started taking her mother’s Xanax and quickly became out of control, ending up in rehab just before her junior year of high school. By the end of episode one, she has already relapsed.
Jules (Hunter Schafer), a transgender girl new to town, tried online dating and met a much older man online under the alias DominantDaddy.
His real name was Cal Jacobs (Eric Dane); they had sex and he recorded it. Jules then encountered ShyGuy118, also known as “Tyler,” who turns out to be Nate (Jacob Elordi), the high school quarterback–and a villain.
He is revealed to be Cal Jacobs’ son. He’d seen Cal’s recording, as well as several other pornographic items in his father’s collection (Cal has been cheating on his wife with several young men and transgender women).
Nate had a physical relationship with his father and was abusive to Maddy, his girlfriend (Sydney Sweeney). He blackmailed Jules into remaining silent about his father, and he blackmailed her again to accuse another boy of raping his girlfriend.
Is There Any Word On Season 3 Of Euphoria?
Not yet, but rumoured Season 2 spoilers were leaked online for a short time. The Maddy/Cassie/Nate situation does not appear to be over (spoilers ahead!) Maddy also has the Jules/Cal DVD, which she intends to use against Nate and Cal.
Fez loses a friend and spirals out of control, Jules and Nate sleep together again, and another character dies, according to the remaining allegedly leaked spoilers. Rue is left to manage her sobriety on her own as a result of all of this.
Moreover, despite the fact that Cal appears to have abandoned his family, Dane assures them that he will return. “I don’t think that’s the end,” he’s said. “The boys are just getting started,” adds Elordi. Is he talking about Nate’s younger brother, who has never appeared on the show?
Season 3 of Euphoria is still a work in progress. Will Laurie go after Rue for the drug money she stole? Is Laurie trying to force Rue into prostitution or sexual slavery?
Is Nate going to be punished at all? Will Rue ever be able to remain sober? How will Rue’s actions affect her younger sister and mother? Rue can only go so far underground.
“It’s really important for her to see the light at the end of the tunnel,” Zendaya said of her character. “Because I believe she possesses a great deal of beauty within her.” It’s up to her whether or not she realises it.”

Tom Holland is another name who could make an appearance next season. According to reports, Spider-Man has been openly dating Zendaya since they were caught kissing last year, and they recently bought a house together.
